THE countdown to Selkirk's 2009 Common Riding began in earnest on Friday night, when James Cheyne was officially appointed Royal Burgh Standard Bearer. And judging by the rousing reception he received from townsfolk as he was carried around the town in time-honoured fashion, this year's principal is an extremely popular choice.
Hundreds of Souters packed the Market Place for Friday night's announcement, with Selkirk Silver Band playing "Up Wi' The Souters" as the Town Hall doors opened to reveal the identity of the town's new principal. The 2009 Royal Burgh Standard Bearer waved enthusiastically to the crowds, and was flanked by his four Attendants - Douglas Gunn, Darren Millar, Craig Monks and Peter Forrest (performing this duty for the first time).
